Discussion Board Summary

It is two months since the last summary and as always, the Politics and Governance forum has led the discussions.
Opinion Call for Riek To Replace Kiir (posted 1 May) has so far had of 26 replies to over 2,300 views for a member's posting of an opinion article in which the writer championed the current GOSS VP Riek Machar for the SPLM Chairmanship at the convention in Juba.
After the SPLM convention, there has been many a discussion about the competencies of GOSS President Salva Kiir and the viability of SPLM in the national political arena. This is pointed out in SPLM Could be Wrong (posted 21 August), Salva Kiir Does Not Have a Chance To Be Next Sudanese President (posted 30 July) and Salva Kiir as Next President of Sudan (posted 29 June).
In SPLM a fierce discussion rages about the conflicting opinions about SPLM aspirations and vision as a political party, in respect to Sudan's national politics. This topic possibly arose from the debate about Salva Kiir aspirations for Sudan's presidency in the latter two topics, where divergent opinions by members on the pursuance of this dream at the possible expense of the CPA.
Bashir Has A Test for Pagan Amum (posted 9 July) reminds members of the uneasy relationship between NCP and SPLM in GONU. The threat to lift Pagan Amum's ministerial immunity leads members to make 10 replies to over 500 views.
Authorship of '1991 Historic Move…Challenged ' (posted 6 July) reminds members of the Bor Massacre of 1991 for which the writer attributes as a turning point for SPLM/A faction led by the late. Dr. Garang. However, in 11 replies to over 400 views, members are torn with this view of that fateful event.
In Peace Process, Path to Reconciliation forum, Kony is Not Serious (posted 13 April) continues to engage members in the peace talks being mediated by South Sudan between the Government of Uganda and LRA's leader Joseph Kony. This brings us to back to the role of International Criminal Court (ICC) within the regions conflicts. In ICC and Darfur War Criminals (posted 30 April) in which the writer calls for assistance in arresting those accused of war crimes of the Darfur crisis, members discuss about providing justice to the people of the Darfur region.
Sudan Oil, Chinese Guns and Coca Cola (posted 22 June) has a member expressing the irony and hypocrisy of Sudan's way of business among so much suffering.
Away from the high octane of politics and peace, in the Development forum, is Juba University Discussion (posted 21 May) that has so far elicited 36 replies to over 2,800 views had members discuss writing the history and collecting memorabilia from Juba University alumni. However, politics is never far removed from the development of South Sudan as represented by Kuol Manyang Should Replace Kiir Mayardit (posted 20 July) and Performance Contracts Are Way Out Of Corruption and Slow Service (posted 6 August).
In the former, the writer extols the efforts of Jonglei State Governor, Kuol Manyang but is quickly rebutted by members who say Jonglei state is far from secure for the Governor to become overly ambitious. While in the latter, the writer makes recommendations for GOSS to fight the battle against corruption amongst its officials. This elicits 11 replies to over 300 views.
Human Rights forum in Media Censorship Is Still Practiced (posted 30 June) serves a reminder to members that the freedom of expression through the media is still along way off.
Alcohol and Drug Abuse – Ticking Time Bomb (posted 9 December 2006) in The Youth: The Future forum, is revisited nearly 2 years on from the first posting as the member calls for education about the dangers of substance abuse.
Evolution and Bible Theories (posted 18 July) in House of Nationalities forum a member posts an article about the origins of the Dinka community and possible links to the Bible. This has elicited 7 replies to nearly 300 views.
To round up the Gurtong Discussion board are the Census 2008 and Elections 2009 and 2011 Referendum: Unity or Separation forums with 3.76 Million People in South Out of 38 Million in Sudan (posted 8 July) and Confederation Discussion (posted 14 January). In the former, members express their disbelief at the numbers while in the later, member are drawn to the unresolved matter of border demarcation between North and South Sudan.
As always the opinion articles on Gurtong provide wide-ranging perspectives of topics covered and insightful views have been made. Gurtong recommends you have a read as a myriad of topical issues have received review.
