Discussion Board Summary

28 May – 24 June 2008

The past month has been relatively quiet on the discussion board in number of topics raised. However, a few topics elicited thoughtful responses to issues sometimes fully understood for their impact on society.

Once again Kony is Not Serious (posted 13 April) continues to rattle members as to many observers, the peace talks being mediated by South Sudan continue to falter with LRA’s leader Joseph Kony elusiveness in signing a peace agreement. So far, 21 replies have been noted to over 1,200 views.

Unfortunately, the peace process in Sudan was shaken to its foundations with the fighting that erupted in Abyei at the start of June. Apart from the death, destruction and displacement of civilians, many began to question the role of United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) in What Should Be the Role of UN in Sudan (posted 1 June). A member highlights an article that likened the current Abyei crises to the Rwanda genocide of 1994.

In the Politics and Governance forum, after the SPLM convention which saw little change in leadership but a restructuring of the political party, a member points a topic that possibly many a south Sudanese has pondered about. Why Many a South Sudanese Hesitate To Take Up Dual Citizenship (posted 8 June) is a constitutional issue in regards to holding political office. Members discuss the merits of such an arrangement and highlight the case of the Acholi and Gajak Nuer.

Human Rights forum in Israel Auctions Sudanese to African Countries (posted 12 June) has members debate about Israel’s latest moves towards its refugees.
