Discussion Board Summary

25 October – 3 December 2007

The past months has seen Sudan plunge into uncertainty with the surprise announcement of SPLM withdrawal from the Government of National Unity (GONU) on 11 October 2007 and the subsequent reactions by both sides has done very little to allay fears of the fallout.

This impasse has elicited various comments from all quarters regarding the fragility of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA). SPLM Pulls Its Members Out of GONU (posted 11 October) has so far elicited 25 replies from over 900 views. Further to that, Bravo To Kiir For Rejecting The US Proposal (posted 11 November) highlights the high octane levels of diplomacy being exercised.

Internally, South Sudan is not entirely at peace as indicated by Appeal To GOSS To Peacefully Resolve Murle Armed Raiding (posted 7 November). In it, members are reminded that there still remains real threat within South Sudan, particularly among the Murle and Dinka Bor in Jonglei state, in the form of child abductions and cattle raiding. This is brought to the fore in Child Abductions in South Sudan: Take Action (posted 2 November) which has 15 replies to over 400 views.

On a slightly different note but of equal importance is discipline among military personnel. GOSS Must Inculcate Discipline Into Its Forces (posted 7 November). This came about after the incident in Yambio that resulted in the death of 3 and world wide condemnation by the south Sudanese Diaspora. This is in some way supported in To Speak or Not To Speak On Things That Hurt (posted 17 September) which looks back at previous killings done during the civil war that has so far elicited 10 replies on the role of the current GOSS Vice-President in the Bor Dinka Massacre.

The political intrigues are still of great interest at both national and local levels. A member points us to Analysis by Kenya’s Daily Nation (posted 2 November) that examines the CPA in light of the SPLM pull out from GONU with respect to the actions of National Congress Party (NCP). Locally, SSLF Denounces SPLM Monopoly of Power In South Sudan (posted 25 October) controversially in a press statement declares the death of CPA and tribal affiliations within SPLM/A. Admirably, members response of 6 replies dismisses these claims.

In the Development forum, members discuss money matters of near equal importance in Should GOSS Borrow Money or Not (posted 10 November) and $37 Million What Exactly Has GOSS Bought (posted 19 November). In the former, members discuss if GOSS has the capability to engage in borrowing money in light of recent corruption scandals resulting from misappropriation of funds. In the latter, 16 replies highlight intrigue over the deal to introduce government satellite TV and radio access into southern Sudan.

To round up the Gurtong Discussion board are the Reflection: Diaspora Sharing Experiences and Matters of Interest forums with Living in America: When Two Cultures Collide (posted 3 November) and A Sickening African Myth: An Old Age as a Free Ticket to Wisdom (posted 3 November). In Reflection we read an account of south Sudanese women living iin USA while Matters of Interest highlights the clash between generations regarding age and the perceived wisdom associated with age.

As always the opinion articles on Gurtong provide wide-ranging perspectives of topics covered and insightful views have been made. Gurtong recommends you have a read as a myriad of topical issues have received review.
