Summary of Discussion Board
September 5 – October 3, 2005
This section has been idle for over three weeks now.
My (ed’s) apologies. I was away in meetings in Rumbek and
Nairobi with limited access to the Internet. How, here we go.
Messages of condolence on Garang’s death
have continued to pour in. Over 90 messages so far. Meanwhile,
the debate about the recently formed Government of National Unity,
GONU, tops the charts:
“CPA
is Dying in Our Watch”, so claims a discussant. For
him, the death of Dr. Garang also spelt the death of the peace
agreement and a return to war. Those who have succeeded Garang
are not, according to him, capable of such a great vision as was
advocated by Garang. As such he is no longer a unionist but separatist.
He posts an analytical article to support his argument; but he
meets with equally determined discussants who dispute some of
his views. Interesting to read. Posted on September 27, it has
so far received 11 replies
“Fooling
the Heroes”, was posted by a discussant angry about
the formation of Government of National Unity and is similar o
the topic above. To him, it was the formation of the “Government
of National Disunity.” The concentration of the powerful
ministries of Finance, Energy and Mining, Home Affairs, Defence
and Justice in the hands of NCP of President Bashir is seen as
clear indication yet that Bashir and company do not want to share
power on equitable terms with the South.
Let’s
Stop Nif from Killing CPA was posted yesterday, October 2.
It echoes the sentiments expressed in the two topics above and
may continue to hot up in the coming weeks.
GONU
Ministers: The List is not Fair is another topic on the same
subject, the hording of powerful ministries in the hands of the
NCP. All these underline the concerns with which Southerners view
the GONU. Posted on September 20, it has so far gathered 19 responses.
Bashir’s
Declaration of Separation Attractive. Again this topic is
about the GONU. To the poster and others who responded, the concentration
of powerful ministries in the hands of Bashir’s party communicate
bad faith. To them nothing has changed in the attitude of Northern
Arabs towards the South and that makes “Separation”
not unity “attractive” to them.
Hard
work: The Spice of a Successful People. The topic is in favour
of hard work as an answer to poverty. While this view is roundly
applauded, others point out that conditions for hard work are
either made favourable through policy or forced on people by internal
and external circumstances. Posted on September 16, it has so
far gathered only 4 responses and may likely continue in the coming
weeks.
Why
Nif Refuse to Let Oil Go is an opinion analysis worth reading
and debating. We will watch its progress in the coming days.
Formation
of GONU is an analytical piece explaining the procedural rules
which were thrown out of the window by Bashir in the middle of
the game.
The
Death of Ideology, Long Live the Ideology! Is a long opinion
piece that requires concentration. Posted on September 29, it
has so far received one reply though it deserves more. The next
few days may change this.
It is recommended that those who
have time to spare should go through the whole posting and select
what they like for themselves.
