Legal Status and Funding
Founded in 2002, the Gurtong Peace
Trust Project is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental, community-based
network. At the beginning of the project, Gurtong was funded by
the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and was enjoying
legal and practical support from the London-based Africa Educational
Trust (AET).
Gurtong Peace Trust is now registered in Kenya
as a Charitable Trust and continues to be wholly funded and supported
by the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs.
Gurtong now plans to move the project to South
Sudan and we are currently working on the registration in Sudan.
Once registered Gurtong will expand into the various states to ensure
an equal collection and distribution of information.
As the three-year programme comes to an end in
January 2008, and considering the great challenges ahead, support
will be needed from other organizations or governments in order
to expand and consolidate Gurtong’s activities that are of
utmost importance to South Sudanese staying in the Diaspora, those
at home and those wishing to return to their families or places
of origin.
