Introduction
Background
Gurtong Peace Trust Project is
an independent, not-for-profit, community-based project, which aims
at removing all ethnic, political or personal obstacles on the way
to unity, peace and mutual respect among South Sudanese.
The project was defined and developed by Napoleon
Adok Gai from Yirol County, South Sudan. Napoleon Adok previously
worked in South Sudan and Kenya for various international organisations
including ICRC, World Vision International and UNICEF before pursuing
further studies in the UK in 2000. It was while in the UK that Napoleon
was inspired by discussions with a number of South Sudanese living
in different parts of Europe, who were mostly cut off from the events
in the Sudan to establish the Gurtong website.
On return to Kenya, Napoleon set up an office in Nairobi, from which
he managed and expanded Gurtong Project until his departure at end
of 2005.
Now headed by Jacob J. Akol since the start of 2006, Gurtong continues
to champion the positive contributions to peace and development
in south Sudan while maintaining its clout of impartiality and resourcefulness.
Gurtong was registered in South Sudan in July 2007
as Gurtong Peace/Media Programme, an NGO. It now has an office in
Juba and an expanded programme for representation in all the capitals
of the ten states of South Sudan, plus Khartoum. Funding available,
Gurtong plans to extend it services into broadcast (radio) and print
(magazine) media in 2008.
